Affiliate Marketing has taken the home-based business world by storm, and with it an entirely new way to make money. Virtually every “.com” website is, in one way or another, an affiliate marketer. Most “.com” sites provide very specialized niche information and within that information they place an ad from Google or a link to an advertiser’s website.
The Five Affiliate Marketing Terms You Must Know
Before we go too much further, there are five terms you need to know to get started in affiliate marketing.
They are the following:
1) An Affiliate – this is you, the owner of the website that will get paid for driving traffic to the commission payer’s website;
2) Advertiser – this is the commission payer that advertises on your site and pays you in return;
3) Affiliate Marketing Network – This is a third party that puts affiliates and advertisers together. They generally represent hundreds of advertisers and thousands of affiliates. These are companies such as Clickbank, Commission Junction, Shareasale, and Linkshare. By subscribing to these sites you also access their vast array of advertisers;
4) Affiliate program – Some advertisers are so big that they have there own program and do not need/want an affiliate marketing network. There are three that you need to know: Google Affiliate Network, Amazon Associates, and the eBay Partner Network. You subscribe to them directly, not through an affiliate marketing network;
5) Expected $ per 100 clicks (EPC). In other words, how much money can you expect to make per 100 people you send to the advertiser’s site.
Some affiliates generate little traffic and a few dollars a month in commission; others generate tons of traffic and tens of thousands of dollars in commission per month. The best of the best are known as Super Affiliates (brilliant!) and generate hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars per month in commissions. The difference between and “Affiliate” and a “Super Affiliate” is often not effort or the quality of website content, it’s a better strategy. Cracking the code literally comes down to doing the right steps in the right order
How to Get Started – Using My Affiliate Sites as Examples
To get started in affiliate marketing you need a website. Some sites are designed around specific niche’s that you can dominate, (see my affiliate site on coin collecting – USACoins.com), others are designed around product comparison (see my affiliate site – HotTenReviews.com) and still others around useful information that people really want or need in their lives (i.e. this site, 101MoneyTalk.com). Each has a different affiliate strategy. USACoins.com will utilize affiliate-marketing networks that offer coin collecting supplies and an eBay Partner Network link to coin auctions; HotTenReviews.com will almost entirely consist of Amazon affiliate links to the top 10 products being compared; and this site will utilize Google ads and information links that help the reader improve their financial well being.
The Best Quality is the Key to Success
One mantra in affiliate marketing is to recommend only what you personally believe in. I’ve taken this to an extreme and I will usually buy what goes up on my sites before I recommend it. I can’t tell you how many times I’m glad I did that! My personal view is that you should do this too. If you have a niche site on say, Horses, and you are an affiliate with an advertiser marketing saddles, you should buy one from the advertiser long before that link or ad goes on your site.
Like any business that has the potential to generate very large sums of commission, affiliate marketing competition is fierce. For every successful affiliate there are numerous that have failed. The reasons are manifold but it usually come down to one fundamental issue – the affiliate market tries really hard on content, but does not know what they are doing everywhere else. Either their websites are substandard with poor designs and bad grammer/spelling errors, or they have not linked article spawning systems such as Facebook, Twitter, AWeber email address capture, etc. The bottom line is that you can experiment for years and generate modest results – this is what 99% of the people who set up affiliate websites do, or you can make a small investment in education that works.
