First there was Tzun Tzu, The Art of War; then came Donald Trump, The Art of the Deal; and now, 101MoneyTalk.com is proud to present . . . dah, dah-dah-dahhhhh! The Art of Couponing!
Look, let’s be honest – no matter how you dress it up, couponing is not sexy, couponing is not trendy, couponing is definitely not “cool” (try whipping out a $2.00 off coupon at Pizza Hut after the High School varsity football game and watch your 15 year old cringe in front of his teammates); HOWEVER, we can tell you that, if done right, couponing will save you a TON of money – and that is cool!
More money that warehouse clubs, more money than Super Tuesday (at the local supermarket), and even more money that buying “private label.”
The problem with couponing is that it’s not easy – in fact it’s difficult. You have to get the paper (and different newspapers do it on different days), search through it and clip what you find. Clipping grocery coupons in and of itself is not difficult – the problem is the sifting; sifting through the paper, looking for free grocery coupons, week after week to see if the “magic” coupon is in there. It’s a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. For those that like the hunt, it’s a rush, for the other 98 percent of us, it’s a bummer.
There is a Better Way . . . Savings Angel or Grocery Game
At 101MoneyTalk.com we are big fans of ease. If something is not easy many people will not do it. There are those who like a challenge, not me, but some. Automated services such as Savings Angel and Grocery Game do all the work for you. Couponing has never been easier. Both Savings Angel and Grocery Game provide two singularly important services. They tell you when the BEST sales price is occurring on most items at your local grocery store, and then they tell you where to go to find the free grocery store coupon to make the price even better. This last part is very important because you no longer need to comb through coupons every week in the newspaper. Just take out the coupon section, toss it in a pile and wait for the notification.
The end result is that those that subscribe to either service (you DO NOT need both) can stock up over a 6-8 week period and realize savings of 50 percent off, on average! Show me a warehouse club that does that!
Now couponing becomes a snap, no more sifting – the only thing you’ll be sifting through on Sunday morning are the channels with the remote for the new LCD flat panel you bought with all the savings!!! – But there is a cost. $19.95 a month for Savings Angel – unlimited stores, or $10 per month for Grocery Game +$5.00 for each additional store. Net, net they are about the same price because most people shop at more than one store.
Both offer you free grocery store coupons. A particularly appealing prospect for the less motivated couponer (yours truly). For those who are REALLY trying to maximize ease, go to coupon.com and start clicking. It’s free, fast and as much as couponing can be, fun!
Until next time, all the best and go save some money!
